Situated on Union Road in the charming coastal town of Tynemouth, Waterfront is a standout fish and chips takeaway that truly captures the spirit and flavors of traditional British seaside dining. This bustling spot offers more than just the classic cod and chips — the menu features enticing options such as a hearty Half Chicken & Chips (£9.60) and crispy Chicken Fillet Bites & Chips (£8.90), catering to those looking for something beyond the sea’s bounty.
The magic of Waterfront lies not only in its expertly battered fish but also in its thoughtfully crafted range of sides and sauces. Their homemade mushy peas, offered at £1.60, come highly recommended, and are the perfect creamy, comforting complement to the golden, crisp chips. Fans of traditional chip shop flavors will appreciate the Garden Peas, Chip Shop Curry, and a variety of rich sauces including gravy, baked beans, and even garlic sauce, all affordably priced between £1.50 and £1.60.
Refreshments range from classic cans of pop like Coke and Irn Bru to soothing cups of tea and coffee, making Waterfront a perfect stop for a quick, satisfying meal regardless of the time of day.
Customers frequently praise Waterfront for its generous portion sizes and fresh ingredients, with one delighted visitor, Julia Cavoner, describing their Fish Bites and Garden Peas as “delicious & so tasty,” while also applauding the “friendly & helpful” staff and great atmosphere. The option to dine inside with plenty of seating makes this more than just a takeaway; it’s a place where locals and visitors alike can sit down to enjoy their meal in a warm, inviting environment. Even during busy lunch hours, guests report swift, attentive service that never misses a beat.
Regulars reward the chip shop with accolades for classic dishes such as hawking the batter on haddock as “excellent,” and recommending plaice for those seeking a fish with a bit more character and flavor. Equally memorable is the lemon sole, described as “particularly good” by another happy patron, Sue Bell.
Waterfront also prides itself on catering to diverse tastes and age groups, offering an over-60s meal special that features all the traditional favorites plus one side and a hot drink, making it an outstanding value for those looking for a wholesome and affordable lunch.
What truly sets Waterfront apart, however, is the genuine warmth and friendliness of its staff, often highlighted by reviewers who find the team not only efficient but welcoming, creating a sense of community around this beloved local fish and chips spot.
For anyone journeying through North Shields or exploring the beautiful northeastern coastline, Waterfront is a must-visit destination that delivers authentic, mouthwatering fish and chips with a side of excellent service and inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re craving classic battered haddock, a comforting portion of mushy peas, or a refreshing pop to wash it down, this local gem captures the heart of British seaside cuisine with every mouthful.

Delicious, fresh fish and chips with plenty of tables to sit in. Large portions and a great selection, including traditional sides such as pickled eggs/onions, cockles, and muscles! Staff are lovely and attentive. I recommend the plaice if you enjoy a little extra flavour in your fish - lush!

Table service in restaurant, can be very busy. Great selection of menu items to meet all tastes including halibut. Sole and mussels. They even do an over 60s special apart from weekends and bank holidays. Nice clean tables, staff very helpful... Well worth a visit if you are passing.

My halibut must have been shocked to have been swimming around in the North Sea this morning and then being served to me at lunchtime. My wife’s cod had a shocked look too. We had the over 60’s special and I’m glad as that was enough food for mid day. The fish and chips were first class, absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The mushy peas were up there with the best I’ve had. I’d go back tomorrow if I had a bigger belt but going back in a couple of weeks will have to suffice.
